Gateway Activation Project (GAP)

Project Information:

The Gateway Activation Project will implement multimodal and roadway improvements along Old Auburn Road and Wachtel Way, connecting to existing multi-modal facilities. This improvement will also provide connection to future facilities proposed by adjacent municipalities, including the City of Roseville and Sacramento County.

The goal of the project is to develop Complete Street solutions to address safety concerns, increase access and mobility connections for all users, and improve operations.

The project is anticipated to address residents’ needs for safe, convenient, and comfortable access to key destinations, including neighborhoods, parks, open spaces, residences, and trail networks within and outside of City limits.

Proposed Project Objectives:

  • Complete Street design for Old Auburn Road and Wachtel Way
  • Extension of multi-modal facilities on Old Auburn Road to the city’s northern border
  • Extension of multi-modal facilities on Wachtel Way to the Old Auburn Road intersection
  • Intersection improvements at Old Auburn Road/Wachtel Way and Old Auburn Road/Oakwood Hills Circle (possibly including a roundabout or traffic signal upgrades)
  • Pedestrian crossing and safety improvements at Old Auburn Road and Argo Drive

Proposed Improvements:

  • Wachtel Way: The bicycle/pedestrian improvements along Wachtel Way will extend from just south of Pitalo Way at Arcade-Cripple Creek Trail to Old Auburn Road. Three alternatives will be evaluated.
  • Old Auburn Road: Bicycle/pedestrian improvements along Old Auburn Road will extend from Auburn Oaks Village Lane on the west to the Placer County line on the east. Two alternatives will be evaluated.
  • Intersection improvements at Argo Drive/Old Auburn Road will evaluate adding a pedestrian crossing and enhanced safety features.
  • Intersection improvements in three locations (Oakwood Hills Circle, Wachtel Way, and Oakwood Hills Circle/Linda Creek Ct) will be evaluated. The team will identify improvements that facilitate traffic safety through these three closely spaced intersections by addressing issues such as the interaction between the three intersections and the difficulty in making the left turn from Oakwood Hills Circle to Old Auburn Road.

Community Outreach and Agency Coordination:

Community outreach and engagement will be vital for this effort, and the team has prepared an engagement plan that includes creating an outreach toolkit, several pop-up events, two community workshops, and updating the project website.

Flyers/fact sheets will be prepared in multiple languages and distributed via direct mail as well as at the project events

See below to sign up for when these events and materials are available.

Timeline:

  • The current timeline comprises traffic studies, environmental clearance, utility coordination, engagement, and right of way acquisition. Project approval and environmental review is expected to be completed in Spring 2026.
  • Construction plans, specifications and estimates are scheduled to be completed in early 2028, with construction set for Spring 2028 (pending funding).
