Below is a summary of recent city-led efforts to create affordable housing opportunities:
- In construction: The Fair Oaks Senior Apartments is a 108-unit, 100 percent affordable senior apartment project that is currently under construction and expected to open in the fall of 2024.
- January 2021 – current: Habitat for Humanity is currently working on a project on Sayonara Drive. The project is currently under review and, if approved, will consist of 26 single-family homes that will provide homeownership opportunities for families with restricted incomes (very low to low area median income). This project hopes to start construction in the Fall of 2024.
- Completed December 2023: Jamboree Housing began its project at Sunrise Pointe in the fall of 2023. This 46-unit apartment project provides permanent supportive housing for those in need due to homelessness, mental health issues, or other needs.
- 2023: The City was approached by the Life Foundation, a non-profit, to be involved in an affordable housing project for seniors at the Auburn Oaks assisted living facility at 7501 Sunrise Boulevard. In August 2022, the City and the Life Foundation entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) as the City has experience applying for grant opportunities. The City assisted the Life Foundation in submitting a funding application to the state, Community Expansion Program, for the acquisition and rehabilitation of the property with the goal to permanently dedicate the property to seniors. The grant application was ultimately denied, and the Life Foundation could not move forward with the purchase of the property.
