Prepare Ahead of Time
Even if you have not experienced flooding problems in the past, you may want to keep flood-fighting materials on hand, such as sandbags and plastic sheeting to protect your property and belongings. Often there are proactive steps taken before a flood that can help protect your property including knowing how to divert floodwater around your structures, and, in some cases, elevating your house above the flood hazard. Measures to protect a property from flood damage also include retrofitting, grading a yard, correcting local drainage problems, and emergency measures, such as moving furniture and sandbagging. See our list of Quick Links on this page or our Flood Information Online Library PDF for suggestions on how to prepare.
Leaf Drop Season
Prevent clogged storm drains by clearing leaves from your yard, driveway, sidewalk and gutter. Sweep or rake leaves and place into your green Organic Waste cart. Do you have more than you can fit in the organic cart? From November through January, RESIDENTIAL CUSTOMERS of Republic Services can place up to six bags of leaves next to your green cart every pickup day! Call General Services at 916-727-4770 for more information.
What should I do with a fallen tree?
Trees in the Road or Right-of-Way
If a tree has fallen in the roadway or on a sidewalk, contact the City of Citrus Heights 916-727-4770 8 AM - 5 PM. After hours, contact the Citrus Heights Police Dept 916-727-5500. Please be patient. It will take time for city crews to cleanup down trees.
Private property trees
If the tree had grown in your yard and has fallen, then you are responsible for its removal. Or call a local tree service for removal. You can take cut or fallen tree branches to:

Cockroach Control in Drainage Systems
The Sacramento region is experiencing a noticeable increase in cockroaches. Cockroaches are natural to most environments and seek out dark, damp environments like sewers and stormwater drains where they can feed on water resources and decaying organic matter. The City of Citrus Heights is working with the Sacramento Area Sewer District (SASD) and neighboring cities to address concerns of pest infestations.
The city of Citrus Heights maintains the stormwater drainage system that connects gutters and drain inlets to the creeks. Due to California environmental regulation, the storm drains are not treated with pesticides because these chemicals are harmful to beneficial insects and wildlife.
The Sacramento Area Sewer District maintains the sewer system that transports wastewater from homes to the water treatment plant. SASD is treating sewer pipes using techniques such as fogging and baiting, "manhole painting," and preventative maintenance. For questions related to cockroaches in sewers, please contact SASD at 916-875-6730.
